MCC Praises Federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban
Act
Leadership of President Bush, Supporting Members of Congressional
Delegation Also Applauded
Similar Victory Over Partial-Birth Abortion Sought in Michigan
LANSING - Capping an almost decade-long effort to outlaw partial-birth
abortion, the Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) today praised the
enactment of S.3, the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, the leadership
of President George W. Bush and the courage and strength of the
members of the Michigan Congressional delegation who voted to pass
the bill.
"Today's signing of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act is truly
an historic moment," said MCC President and CEO Sister Monica
Kostielney, R.S.M. "This is an achievement for life, a great
victory for women, for unborn children and for all Americans. I
commend the leadership of President Bush and the members of the
Michigan Congressional delegation who supported this bill for their
efforts to end such a ghastly procedure."
In the almost 10 years since legislation to ban partial-birth abortions
was first considered in Congress, the partial-birth ban has enjoyed
strong support from an overwhelming majority of the American people.
"Leadership has been shown on so many levels and it truly takes
the fortitude and determination of countless people to accomplish
such a feat," said Sister Monica. "There is still plenty
of work to be done regarding abortion, but I am confident that all
of the dedicated individuals who fought for today's victory will
continue their efforts with the same level of steadfast vigilance."
"I am also confident that concerned parties will soon come
together to achieve a similar victory over partial-birth abortion
in Michigan."
The Michigan Catholic Conference is the public policy voice for
the Catholic Church in this state.
